The Ponnaniyaru dam is located 72 km away from Trichy city. It is a typical dam with interesting features like the dam is built in-between two mounds viz. Perumal malai and Chemmalai. Also, it is really interesting to note that the building structure of the dam is located in Tiruchirappalli district, and the water release point is located in Karur district.

The Kallanai dam is widely acknowledged as one of the ancient dams of the world. Incredibly, it is still in use that Kallanai is built around 2nd Century AD by Karikala Cholan (Chola king). Kallanai was constructed with the intention of diverting the Kaveri River to the productive delta region through a long and narrow strip of water channels.
